PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) is a normal hormonal condition that women undergoes when they produces more than enough androgens. It is associated with gestational diabetes as both cases develop insulin resistance. Patients diagnosed with this syndrome are suffering from abnormal bleeding, infertility, obesity, excess hair growth, hair loss and acne.
Women with PCOS will develop type 2 diabetes as they grow older. According to the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, half of the women that have PCOS are fat. Much of their weight is stored in the core. PCOS is linked with alleviated risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemia and endometrial cancer.
Scientist doesn't know where the disease comes from but they are assuming with genetics.
The condition can be diagnosed by consulting medical histories, followed by recommendations from your physician about which test are required. If the woman experience irregular menstrual period then notes taken from the bodily exam will be measured subsequently. Included in the exam are height, weight, body hair, acne and acanthosis nigricans (a discoloration of the skin under the arms, breasts and in the groin). After that, a two-hour insulin and glucose test will be use to find the result of the diagnosis.
Long-established treatments are costly and demanding. Some doctors recommend ovarian drilling, or diabetes medication to keep the syndrome at bay.
Laparoscopy is performed in ovarian drilling. Laparoscopy is otherwise known as the operation that is done inside the abdomen with small incision with the help of a camera. It results to a lowered male-hormone level after the procedure.
Women that undergo PCOS also go through elevated insulin levels. This is the reason why doctors advise their patients to take metformin.
At the first week of using metformin, patients are urged to intake one 500 mg daily. After the first week then it will be increased to 850 mg which will be taken twice a day. If the patients notice that they are experiencing lactic acidosis, they should inform their physician and halt the medication.
